Helsinki, the capital lies on the coast of the Gulf of Finland – opposite is the Republic of Estonia. More than two thirds of the urban area consists of water – over 300 skerries are in front of the town, the coast is very indented with lots of peninsulas and bays. The best-known islands are Suomenlinna with an old stronghold, which is part of the World Cultural Heritage, Korkeasaari with a zoo and Seurasaari with an open-air museum. Sailors starting their trip from Helsinki, will enjoy the vibrant urban life on the promenades of Esplanadi and Aleksanterinkatu, admire the Orthodox cathedral or maybe visit an open-air festival during a long Nordic night. By the way: there is also a beach in Hietaniemi bay in the west of Helsinki.
